Artist: Lyonel Grant
Year: 2020
Location: Parky Hyatt Auckland, inside the porte-cochère
Mounted on the wall of the porte-cochère at Park Hyatt Auckland, this carved waka (canoe) form by Lyonel Grant draws inspiration from a local whakataukī (proverb) that describes Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) as "a resting place for many canoes." This proverb speaks to the rich layers of tribal association with the region and symbolizes Auckland as a place of safe arrival, unity, and welcome.
The work embodies themes of whakawhanaungatanga—hospitality, connection, and relationship-building. The form of the canoe and the intricately carved details represent a weaving together of cultures, offering a visual metaphor for human connection and the idea that Auckland is a safe haven for all people to commune as one.
